DA Hopefuls Turn Up the Heat
NORTHAMPTON — As the Sept. 14 Democratic Party primary election draws nearer, the battle between Michael A. Cahillane and David E. Sullivan for the Northwestern District Attorney’s seat is heating up. The winner will take office next January, since no Republicans are on the Nov. 2 general election ballot.
On Thursday, Sept. 9, at 12:30 p.m., WWLP-Channel 22 TV will live-broadcast a 30-minute, Lincoln-Douglas-style debate between the two. The station will also live-stream video on the web at www.wwlp.com.
On Friday morning, Cahillane and Sullivan will take to the WHMP radio airwaves. The candidates, who have traded some sharp commentary in recent weeks, will be guests on the station’s “Eggs and Issues” program from 9 to 10 a.m. at Sylvesters Restaurant on Pleasant Street in Northampton. Chris Collins, the station’s hard-boiled news director, will be tossing out the questions.
“I’m going to host a conversation between the two,” Collins told Northampton Media. “Yes, we’ll explore the issues, but my goal is to get to know these guys. I’d like to have the opportunity to learn more about the two candidates; to find out what makes them tick.” WHMP broadcasts at AM 1240, 1400 and FM 96.9.
Also on Friday, the two candidates are scheduled to attend a an evening cocktail party and fundraiser to support the Northampton Media newsroom, to be held at the Northampton Country Club, 135 Main St., Leeds. The doors open at six. Each candidate will be given 10-15 minutes to speak at around 7:30, and will be introduced by reporter David Reid. NM is endorsing neither candidate.
Admission is on a sliding scale; we’re suggesting a donation of $20 at the door. Food, jazz, and DA candidates — We’re encouraging our readers to come out and have a splendid time.
