NORTHAMPTON — Northwestern District Attorney David Sullivan confirmed today that a man was discovered deceased Friday afternoon next to the Pan Am railroad tracks between Hawley and Pleasant Streets behind Northampton Lumber. His death is not considered suspicious in nature.
Sullivan has not yet released the man’s name or the circumstances of his death.
[Update: Northampton Police Lt. Michael Patenaude confirmed to Daily Hampshire Gazette reporter Ben Storrow today that a 28-year-old man was found dead after hanging himself at 4:34 p.m.]
Police scanner audio reveals [a dispatcher told police a man was witnessed climbing a tree with a rope in the area between the tracks and Northampton Lumber in the late afternoon.]
Clarification: the woman who placed the 911 call contacted Northampton Media by email to say she never saw a man climbing a tree, and that it was “too late” by the time she placed the call.
Northampton police officers and an ambulance arrived minutes later. Police were heard calling in crime scene investigators. Sullivan personally responded to the scene.
Details will be posted as they are confirmed by official sources.
