Last Thursday, the Northampton City Council discussed a motion to transfer $134,000 from the Parking Meter Reserve Fund to the Parking Division Capital Vehicle Fund to pay for a bucket loader that Parking wants to use for snow removal in its downtown lots. Sound routine? Don’t start yawning yet.

CPC Grants Farmland Preservation Funding; Lombard Recuses Self from Vote

Northampton’s Community Preservation Committee (CPC) voted unanimously last night to fund the full $990,000 application for the permanent preservation of the Bean and Allard Farms in Florence. A site plan for the land, which is expected to host three uses—agricultural, recreational, and conservation—has yet to be developed.

State Initiative Petitions Referred to Committee

Massachusetts lawmakers have begun to route potential 2010 ballot questions to committees for review.

The Revenue Committee, co-chaired by Lexington Democrat Jay Kaufman, will review a pair of tax questions: The “3% Sales Tax Relief Act,” filed by Carla Howell, former Libertarian party candidate for governor, would reduce the state’s 6.25 percent sales tax, boosted from 5 percent last summer, back down to 3 percent. Another, filed by the Massachusetts Package Stores Association, would exempt retail alcohol sales from the state’s 6.25 percent sales tax.

Historic Votes Expected at BPW Meeting Tonight

The Northampton Board of Public Works (BPW), in anticipation of a big crowd, will hold its biweekly meeting tonight at the JFK Middle School cafeteria at 5:30 p.m.

Two discussions and possible motions are on tonight’s agenda—one having to do with a major expansion of the city’s regional landfill on Glendale Road, and the other with the fate of the historic Upper Roberts Meadow Reservoir and Chesterfield Road Dam.
